West Fair and Rodeo Association
West, Texas

Our Beginnings

On June 24th, 1947 at 8 PM, H. J. Kozelski, President of the West Chamber of Commerce, called a meeting to order for the purpose of organizing a fair and rodeo association. Henry Heitmiller made a motion to name it the West Fair and Rodeo Association.
R.J. Marak of the nominating committee nominated George I. Kacir as Chairman, Joseph F. Holasek as Vice-chairman, E. E. Wallas as Second Vice-Chairman, Fred Plsek as Secretary-Treasurer and Reverend J. E. Roth, H. L. Heitmiller, Louis Kramr, Raymond Nemecek and E. J. Black as Directors. August Dulak made a motion that the Officers and Directors find suitable land for purchase.

On July 9th, 1947, Joseph F. Holasek reported that an arena would cost around $4100 to build, including chutes, pens and bleachers. C. P. Vickery estimated it would cost around $2125 to build a 40' x 100' Fair Building. The committee of C. P. Vickery, Elo Zatopek, J. L. Horsak, Louis Kramr and H. L. Heitmiller accompanied Joe Goddard, the City Surveyor, to determine the corners on fifteen acres of land A. F. Pustejousky had agreed to sell to the Association.

On August 21st, 1947, the committees met with B. B. Bruner, a rodeo producer. He offered to put on a Class A, 3 day rodeo for $1750. Total purse was set at $1700 with an additional budget of $500 for advertising, tickets and utilities. The committee accepted the offer and the first rodeo was held October 2nd-4th, 1947.
